Dans un futur proche, une société produit des clones destinés à fournir des organes de substitution à de riches commanditaires. Ces créatures, tenues dans l'ignorance de leur condition, vivent en vase clos dans une colonie régie par des codes stricts et totalement aseptisée. Un jour, l'un d'entre eux (Ewan McGregor), plus curieux que les autres, se met à poser des questions embarrassantes…
Contre toute attente, Michael Bay, le roi de la pyrotechnie et de la destruction massive (Armageddon, Bad Boys ...) s'est tourné en 2005 vers la science-fiction avec une louable ambition. Certes, la première partie du film se contente de “cloner” habilement des univers déjà connus (THX 1138, Minority Report) mais, la seconde, davantage dans les cordes du réalisateur, se révèle une course-poursuite phénoménale, avec cascades à gogo et effets de suspense ébouriffants. Michael Bay filme en virtuose et avec une efficacité qui force le respect ce thriller plutôt bien ficelé, dans lequel les inattendus Scarlett Johansson et Ewan McGregor apparaissent plus glamour que jamais.
