Depuis l'invasion des morts-vivants, les humains vivent reclus dans une ville-bunker dirigée par Kaufman (Dennis Hopper), qui assure la sécurité des habitants grâce à un commando de mercenaires efficace. Mais un jour, ceux-ci découvrent que les morts-vivants ont évolué et savent maintenant communiquer entre eux…
En 2005, George A. Romero est revenu au genre qu'il avait créé en 1968 avec La Nuit des morts-vivants. Quatrième chapitre de la saga, après Zombie et Le Jour des morts-vivants, Land of the Dead réussit le pari de conjuguer le thriller d'action (pimenté de gore) et la fable politique. Les ressemblances entre la cité-bunker et l'Amérique actuelle ne sont pas fortuites, les zombies incarnant quant à eux la menace terroriste grandissante. Un film d'horreur aussi intelligent que jubilatoire !
